Clerk's Ward (AR0600)

Did we miss anything on this map? Is there something we didn't discover? Let us know!

The Lady's Ward may be the most powerful and prestigious, but cutters from the Clerk's Ward proudly point out that it's their ward that keeps the city running. This is the domain of bureaucrats, scribes, sages, and scholars. Here, life is peaceful and without surprises - or without too many surprises, at least. It's the perfect burgomaster's neighborhood.

1 - Arrival

You'll first enter the Clerk's Ward under this archway. If you move slightly downward, you'll find a woman named Diligence and her bodyguard Matter-Of-Course. Diligence will tell you that she is part of the Fourth Magistrate of the Ward and that your filthy appearance shouldn't be tolerated in the ward. You can convince her otherwise if you are friendly to her and tell her the story of why you look the way you do. After you explain things to her, she will wish you well, but won't answer any questions or provide any useful information.

2 - Goncalves the Tailor

This is the shop of Goncalves, the tailor. Just outside the entrance, you'll run into a man named Malmaner. He will ask you to retrieve a Dustman costume inside the tailor's shop for a costume party he is going to. Go inside, pay for it, and return it to Malmaner for 8000 experience points. However, if you tell him that a lot of other people are wearing Dustmen costumes to the party, he will ask that you go inside and get him a different one. Run inside, buy another, and return it to him for another 6000 experience points.

Additionally, Goncalves will sell you different body armors for Annah and Fall-From-Grace. Refer to the table below for a full list of the equipment Goncalves has to offer.

Goncalve's Tailory
Bodice of the Godless Priest [1] Bodice of the Perilous Quest [1] Jerkin of the Brazen Rogue [1]
Jerkin of the Flitting Shadow [1] Needle and Thread [∞]

3 - Exit

This exit leads down to UnderSigil.

4 - Civic Festhall Entrance

This entrance leads into the first section of the Civic Festhall. Outside, you'll find a couple of interesting people to speak with. One of them is Sarhava Vjhul, a feisty woman with a couple of bodyguards. If Annah is in your party, Sarhava will taunt her into battle. If you want, you can let them duke it out and watch Sarhava die (she has nothing of value, however).

The other person worth speaking to is Salabesh the Onyx. He will tell you that he would like to become the mage trainer within the Civic Festhall. Head inside and talk to one of the training mages, who will send you to Lady Thorncombe in the public sensorium. Speak with her and you'll find out that she doesn't want to be the mage trainer anymore. Bring the news back to Salabesh and then return to Lady Thorncombe for 12,000 experience points. Afterwards, the Lady will train you as a mage or sell you some scrolls.

5 - Eli Havelock

A man named Eli Havelock stands here. He claims to be a master of subterfuge, and you can try to convince him to train you as a thief. If you succeed in convincing him, you get a nice experience reward.

6 - Brothel Entrance

This is the entrance to the Brothel of Slating Intellectual Lusts, where an assortment of quests can be found.

Additionally, near the entrance, you can find a man named "Jolmi's Messenger". Talk with him and he'll send you to Jolmi in the Civic Festhall. Jolmi will tell you that she wants the experience of killing a man, and since you're immortal, no harm will be done. She'll even pay you copper, so feel free to reap some extra cash.

7 - Apothecary

The apothecary resides here at area #7. On your initial visit, you'll meet a man named Pestle Kilnn who has the peculiar ailment of being two people within one body. Bring him the Potion of Horrific Separation from Vrischika in the Curiosity Shoppe (located at area #10) and you can cure him.

Afterwards, there will be two separate people to speak with, Pestle and Kilnn. Pestle will then sell you charms and even provide you with clot charms for a bit of your blood. If you are completing Nihl's first task towards acquiring the Dream Machine in the Great Foundry, then you'll want to talk to Pestle about getting your flesh and blood in a bottle.

8 - Aelwyn

A woman named Aelwyn will be standing near this tent. If you've spoken with Nemelle at area #15, you will want to let Aelwyn know that Nemelle is looking for her. She will ask that you return to Nemelle and let her know where she is. Head back to area #15 and bring the news to Nemelle. As a reward, Nemelle will kiss you, which will increase your maximum Hit Points by three, as well as 8000 experience points.

9 - Elobrande

Here you'll meet a fortune teller named Elobrande. She will ask for some copper to tell you your fortune, but will return it when she realizes that you have no fortune. Before you can say farewell, however, she will hand you a scroll that she claims was left for you some time ago by a hooded man. If you open the scroll, it will give you a message and then dissolve into noxious magic that will hurt or even kill the Nameless One. Use at your own risk.

10 - Vrischika's Curiosity Shoppe

This is the Curiosity Shoppe, run by a fiend named Vrischika. Vrischika sells all sorts of fun equipment, as well as exotic items that are used in various quests. You'll basically want to purchase all the exotic wares she has available.

Additionally, if you have the Grimoire of Pestilential Thought from the wrecked building in the Lower Ward, you may choose to do its bidding and sell one of your NPCs into slavery. Vrischika will gladly buy them, if you choose to do this.

For a full list of all items that Vrischika is able to sell, please refer to the table below.

Vrischika's Curiosity Shoppe
Angle-Less-Eye [∞] Ashes of the Pabulum [1] Charm of Infinite Recall [∞]

11 - Finam the Linguist

The building here is the home of a linguist named Finam. Just outside the building, you will find the leader of a group of thugs simply called "Thug Boss". If you speak to him, a fight is pretty much inevitable. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, though. If you have spoken with Mertwyn, the headless man in the Civic Festhall, you'll want to slay him. Search his corpse for a box containing Mertwyn's head, then return the head to Mertwyn to receive a nice experience reward.

Once you've taken care of the thugs, head inside to speak with Finam. He will tell you about how his father was murdered some time ago and that his ashes are contained in an urn within Finam's house. If you learned the Speak with the Dead ability from Stale Mary in the Dead Nations, you can speak to Finam's father through his ashes. Through the conversation, you can learn a new language (used to decipher the Dodecahedron found in your room in the Civic Festhall) and who Finam's father's killer was... you. You can choose to admit to the murder and Finam's father will try to forgive you, after which you'll receive 4000 experience points.

12 - Art and Curio Galleria

Here at area #12 resides the Art and Curio Galleria, which is ran by an old woman named Yvana. Yvana will tell you about the various pieces within the "museum", and you'll find that some of them will provide a use to your journey.

One such use is during your quest to help Dolora (one of the "prostitutes" in the Brothel of Slating Intellectual Lusts) retrieve the keys to her heart from a man named Merriman in the Civic Festhall. Merriman will not give up the keys unless you find a way for him to forget about Dolora. Here in the Galleria, if you have the Frost-Ale Mug from Vrischika's Curiosity Shoppe, you can grab one of the Dark Birds of Ocanthus and put it within the mug. Yvana will tell you that a draught from the mug will cause someone to lose memories, so you'll want to bring it to Merriman. This will get you the keys and a nice experience bonus.

Another exhibit worth visiting is the Hag of Oinos, which will get you some experience just for inspecting it. Finally, there are a couple interesting tidbits of information surrounding the Gangroighydon statue. First, if you have the Forge Hammer from the Great Foundry in the Lower Ward, you can use it to break off a small piece, which is actually a weapon called the Mad Splinter. Secondly, if you have the Gorgon Salve from Vrischika's Curiosity Shoppe, you can actually restore the creature to flesh once again. However, as soon as it is restored it will curse and the Nameless One will die (temporarily, of course).

13 - Advocate Iannis

This is Advocate Iannis' home, who you'll eventually discover is your late girlfriend Deionarra's father. If you have read the Dodecahedron (found in your room within the Civic Festhall - see area #11 on how to learn its language), one of the options will give you a legacy number. Tell Iannis your legacy number and he will give you a Kaleidoscopic Eye, the Stone Gullet of L'Phahl the Gross, and a receipt for the Great Foundry.

If you join the Sensates and visit the Private Sensorium, you can find out Deionarra's legacy number from one of the Sensory stones. Tell Iannis this number to claim Deionnara's Wedding Ring and a scroll of Heal. One final item worthy of note is that you can tell Iannis about Deionnara's sensory stone within the Civic Festhall. He will ask you to get him inside so that he might experience the stone. Talk with Splinter inside the festhall and he will agree to let Iannis in.

14 - Exit

These stairs leads down to UnderSigil.

15 - Able Ponder-Thought, Drunken Mage, and Nemelle

There are three people to speak with near these tents. One is Able Ponder-Thought, who will give you some information on Ravel and the Lady of Pain's Mazes.

Another is a Drunken Mage who will tell you that he cannot possibly stop drinking. If you tell him about Unfulfilled-Desire (the woman in the back rooms of the Civic Festhall) and her ability to take away someone's desire, you will gain 10,000 experience and the drunken mage's Frost-Ale Mug.

The third person to speak with is Nemelle. She will be able to provide you with the command word for the Decanter of Endless Water (if it's in your possession), thus allowing you to free Ignus in the Smoldering Corpse Bar in the southeast portion of the Hive. Nemelle will also ask you to find her friend Aelwyn, whom you can find at area #8. Go to Aelwyn and tell her that Namelle is looking for her, and then return to Namelle. She will kiss you, which will increase your maximum hit points by three and grant you some experience.
